Week 14: My baby's leaving the nest

August 25, 2013

Family,

If you were worried when I didn't email on Monday, worry no longer. I, like you, had completely forgotten that A. transfers were even happening and B. that means P-day is on Wednesday. The reason Sister Slater and I hadn't given transfers a second thought is because we were 99.9% sure it wouldn't affect us. We're both so brand new! We even planned William's baptism for transfer day! But, missions are all about surprises, right? We had just arrived home and had some dinner after Caty's baptism on Saturday when our phone rang. When we saw it was President Packard, we looked at each other and screamed "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" I maybe whimpered a little on the phone... #wussy.

Hence, the title of this week's email.

I mean, I'm not surprised because Sister Slater was already ahead of me when she got here, so she's the one who's been teaching me all this time. It's just so hard to lose her! She's such an easy person to get along with. And I feel like we work together really well, especially when we teach. But, I'm excited for her new assignment- she's headed to Plymouth and it sounds like she's really needed there. I have full confidence that she will ROCK IT!

And what am I to do? Well, with 11 more sisters coming in, I'm training again! I'm stoked. It's a great chance to repent for all the things I didn't do right with Sister Slater. :) Transfer meeting is tomorrow! I feel like the mission is helping me understand so many aspects of life- this must be how parents feel when their kids leave for college. Did I teach her everything I was supposed to?! Or did I totally fail as a parent/trainer?!

As for William's baptism, we had to move it anyway. He's been having a hard time getting work off on Sundays, so we and the Bishop feel like he needs a couple more Sundays at church. He's amazing! Ready from day 1, much like Sister Slater. He's already living exactly like we are, he's just not a member yet. :) His baptism is Sept. 12th!

And CATY!!! Her baptism was perfect. It felt totally surreal though - I think I was so caught up in the administrative preparation, plus I'm barely starting to understand the full significance of what this means for Caty. But she was so happy! And so were her parents- the Elders taught Rosa and Jorge, who were baptized at the end of July. It has been so incredible to watch the Spirit come into her countenance- it is subtle, but it is there. :) She is eating up the Book of Mormon and she's already dug into Personal Progress! She is going to be such a boost to our ward's YW program and such a light to her family.

So my baby is leaving the nest, but speaking of babies, I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT ODETTE! Congrats Monreals! She looks so perfect and Fiona looks so ridiculously excited to be a big sister. :) I've been wondering all week about the baby!

I love you all! Thank you for the emails and updates. I love being a missionary! It is so fun to be able to forget myself and be an instrument in the Lord's hands. This truly is his restored gospel! It is such a blessing to know what God's plan is for us- it is a perfect plan! And it makes us so happy when we align our will with His. He can make so much more of us than we can on our own.

Much love!
Sister Wheeler

P.S. I'm caving and sending you a few digital pics from Sis. Slater's camera. From left to right, Sister Slater, me, Sister Platt (being trained by Sister Hollan now), Sister Hollan, Sister Bringhurst (Sister Hollan's trainer.) Sister Hollan loathes these "generation" photographs. :)

Oh, and those will be our seats at the game on Monday. :)
