My family!!!
That's right! My new greenie is Sister Watts of San Jose, California! Together, we sound like a detective team - "Watts & Wheeler". :) She is so ready to teach and I'm so excited to work with her!
I maybe accidentally tried to kill her on day one... So we had transfers Wednesday night (which was crazy with all the last-minute packing and it was way too fun to see ALL of my previous mission companions there, including Sister Hollan who instantly makes me start laughing so hard), and then Thursday we had a "storm" (so wussy) and all of the missionaries with cars were "red-dotted" which meant they couldn't drive, but we don't have a car, so I was like, "We are going out and DOING something!" So, we walked over to Sherri's house and shoveled the driveway. And then we rode a bus with our shovels to East Providence to shovel Lori Barr's driveway, but by then it had turned into freezing rain. So, we hurried and shoveled what was left of the snow and then asked our roommates (who had been un-red-dotted) to pick us up. We were both freezing and I think my new Californian companion hates me for it. :) That's one way to break them in, right? :) We were so exhausted by the end of the day. When we woke up Friday morning, I felt like I'd been hit by a bus.
Anyway, that was day one. Friday, we had a lovely Valentine's dinner with one of our members, Sister Ruel, who so nice! She gave us roses and made a yummy pink cake. And the lesson we had prepared was just what she needed, so I felt successful! Most of the time, I feel like I have no idea what the people we teach need, especially members, so it was such a boost to feel successful.
Saturday, we had a great lesson with Maya, our 16 year old eternigator. She had set a goal to pray before homework and tests last week and she TOTALLY felt a difference. YES!!!! And then we had a great lesson with her about fasting and she's going to try it out next fast Sunday. Also, there was another "storm" on Saturday.
Sunday was so stinking hysterical. Sister Watts is very particular and put-together and I maybe didn't do a good enough job prepping her for the beautiful chaos that is our Branch. So many different quirky people but I LOVE it! :) Gospel Principles was taught by a member who I've heard the Elders complain about teaching false doctrine, but I've never experienced it. Needless to say, I was DYING in class. Trying to hold back giggles for most of it because it was ridiculous! He was pinching our investigator, Bob, who is a sweet old man, to illustrate that Christ felt our pains. He also declared quite loudly that he had a six pack one time in his life when he was a Navy seal (which the Elders claim is false), and the best part of all was when he talked about the life of Christ and didn't make any mention of the Atonement, so Sister Watts raised her hand to add a thought about it, and the teacher was like, "Steal MY thunder, will ya? Come to my house and eat at my dinner table and see what happens to you." SO. STINKING. HYSTERICAL. And then another member walked by and gave Sister Watts the creepiest smile and I almost lost it. I love this branch so much!
Also, so many MIRACLES happened on Sunday. A woman named Deidre, who speaks English, went to the Spanish ward and LOVED it. So the Spanish sisters gave us her info. Also, a lady in our ward has a cousin named Suzannah who just moved in and wants to get baptized. And we also met a girl named Gege who wants to come to church on Sunday. I feel so humbled!!!
Yesterday was fantastic! We were able to go to the temple and I felt so peaceful. Also, the Cambridge 2nd Ward was serving as the ordinance workers, so I got to see all the people I love!! It was so special. :)
Okay, must run! I love you all so much!!! This gospel is the key to our happiness and we are so blessed to have it. Our Heavenly Father and Savior love us so deeply and are anxious to see us grow and succeed in this life and be happy and return to live with them!
Love,
Sister Wheeler Jr.
P.S. I found out that the Mafia is alive and well in Rhode Island. And that the government is so corrupt that the infrastructure is crumbling. Instead of repairing the roads, they have a fund to pay for claims. Our members were driving us home after dinner last night and they hit a pot hole that was so bad it destroyed their tire. This state is so crazy! :) It is the 50th ranking for business-friendly states and the 1st or 2nd for unemployment. Keep it classy, Rhode Island. :)
