Week 9

June 22, 2013

Hello my darling family!

It's been a crazy week here in Cambridge, but awesome! I've been doing some serious repenting for ever judging Sister Hollan as a trainer. :) It is a lot more work than I realized. I've been losing sleep over the stress of filling our days with meaningful activities. I've been so self-conscious of everything I do because I was so critical as a greenie. But, my new companion is Sister Slater from Salem, Utah and she is adorable! She danced for a year at Snow College before coming out, so that's been fun common ground to discuss. She is so kind and put-together. Her MTC/greenie fire has been so refreshing!

P.S. I hope you all know how much I love Sister Hollan. She is so funny and so driven and taught me so much. :) I am missing her.

Transfers were on Thursday and Friday morning we had an appointment with William. HE IS GOLDEN! He doesn't smoke or drink and decided to give up coffee on his own. His friend's mom is in the MoTab, so he's listened to Conference before and loves it. He completely understands the father-son relationship we have with Heavenly Father. He wants to meet again this Friday and said he would get baptized if he found this was true. AMAZING. The only issue- he lives in NH, but works in Boston all the time. He said he only sleeps in NH, but we want to be sure he is being taught/baptized in his ward boundaries. There is absolutely power in those boundaries and stewardships. So, we're asking President Packard what to do on that, but I'm so excited for William either way. He is so ready for the gospel.

Friday afternoon we had ANOTHER 1st lesson (how's that for Sis. Slater's first day, huh?) with Caty. She is the 16 year old daughter of Rosa and Jorge who our Elders have been teaching and who are getting baptized on Saturday! (So awesome!) We taught Caty the first lesson and she was so excited about it! She was so excited to learn that we still have prophets today and she was so excited when we taught her how the Book of Mormon is so applicable to our lives. Her enthusiasm was so refreshing! :) She says she wants to get baptized, she just feels like she's lacking knowledge. We told her that's what we're here for. :) We invited her to church and gave her the first 5 chapters of 1 Nephi to read and she seemed a little like "yeah, if I feel like it." (classic teenager) :) but she came on Sunday (which was PERFECT because one of our YW, Stephanie Grace, who is a recent convert (and is headed to BYU!) spoke and told her story and it was SO powerful- you could've heard a pin drop) and she had already read all of our assigned chapters! Maybe we should've been less surprised (where is our faith?!) but we were SO stoked about it! We told her to keep reading and that we could meet with her before Friday if she wanted, so we'll see where that goes. SHE'S AWESOME! :) We'll be praying this week about baptismal dates for her and William.

By the way, did I mention that Mitt Romney's son is in the Belmont ward which is just north of us? Sister Garcia was in my Zone right before she went home and she met Mitt Romney when she was over there teaching one evening. It's like whatever. IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK THAT I JUST WANT TO MEET HIM BEFORE I COME HOME?!

Did I also mention that Clayton Christensen's son is my bishop and he played basketball for Duke? HE IS SO TALL. And has the largest hands. It's always intimidating to shake his hand. :) But he is a gentle giant.

Fam, the gospel is so simple. And so true. And it makes me so happy! I discovered Doctrine and Covenants 78:18 the other day and it was so perfect. It spoke to me of how this life is all about progression (perfection is a process!) and how Christ is our example and is with us every step of the way. Truly, "He leads me, He leads me along." I've been so overcome this week as I've realized that we have been given everything we need to return home to our Heavenly Father and that demonstrates to me how much He loves us. So much more than we can even comprehend. And all we have to do is what He asks of us. Amazing.

I love you all so very much and am so grateful for your love and support! Have a lovely summer week.
Love,
Sister Wheeler

P.S. I entered the MTC two months ago today! Isn't that crazy?! In some ways it feels like two months and in some ways it feels like two days ago... the mission is a weird time-warp. :)
